Life has been a little hectic recently. So earlier this month, I decided to treat myself to a copy of the official Tomb Raider colouring book as a way to channel my creativity and let off some steam. The book was published by Dark Horse Comics and released back in February 2019, and it is jam-packed with stunning artwork.
Is it a worthy addition to a Tomb Raider fan’s collection? Let’s dive in.
The artwork chosen for this colouring book is exquisite and each piece is accompanied by a relevant quote that pays homage to the franchise and its beloved heroine. My personal favourites are Maxim Ragey’s intricately detailed tribute to Tomb Raider II and the Lara Croft gathering in Croft Manor but each of the 45 black-and-white illustrations has something unique to offer.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is slightly over-represented in this colouring book but you’ll find almost every Tomb Raider game and Lara Croft spin-off featured in here. There’s even a couple of nods to the old Top Cow comics. Sadly, none of the three live-action Tomb Raider films made it into the book, possibly due to copyright reasons. So if you were hoping for some artwork of Angelina Jolie or Alicia Vikander, you’re out of luck.
Comic artists Philip Sevy and Randy Green were among the artists who provided artwork for this official colouring book. French designer Tholia (Priscilla Bentz) and San Francisco-based artist Katie Manijak also lend their talents to this tome.
But what really makes this book special is that it includes artwork by Tomb Raider fan community members Tiphaine Vaudable, Maxim Ragey, FalconInna, Loïc Leroy, and Libbey O’Gorman, whose work was chosen via a fan-art contest held last summer. Dark Horse Comics and Square Enix had initially planned to release a supplementary PDF containing the contest entries that were not chosen for the final book but this has failed to materialise. If anyone has any information about this, please let me know!
There’s not a great deal more for me to say about this colouring book except that it’s a must-buy for any Tomb Raider fan, is great value for money, and is a fantastic way to indulge your inner artist. It’s also a pleasant way to unwind after a stressful day at school or work. I’ve yet to embark on my own artistic endeavour but I can already tell that I’m going to have a blast.
