Lara’s Got a License to Kill (or Avoid) in Rise of the Tomb Raider

If you’re a little squeamish about knifing men in the throat with a broken bottle or simply prefer to scurry about undetected, you’ll be happy to know that Lara has evolved into a much stealthier adventurer since her last outing and that she can choose to evade, rather than kill, some of her enemies.

As the latest clip released by Crystal Dynamics shows, it’ll be possible to play through certain sections of the game in a non-lethal manner by using bottles and other projectiles to distract and lure enemies away, sneaking around and hiding behind objects, or taking the high road to bypass potential hotspots.

Creative Director Noah Hughes explains that while combat is sometimes unavoidable, Rise of the Tomb Raider’s combat system has been built to offer players as many choices as possible. So it’ll be entirely up to the player to decide whether the best course of action is to sneak past Lara’s enemies to save valuable ammo or take them down in increasingly imaginative – and gruesome – ways to gain XP.

There’s just two things I’d like to say about this clip: 1) it’s great to have the grappling hook back, even if it’s just a climbing axe tied to a piece of rope, and 2) Trinity seems to hire some of the dumbest, most easily distracted mercenaries around. Though I must give credit where it’s due: they all seem to have excellent hearing as they’re able to hear the sound of an arrow or can hitting the ground a few metres away from them over the constant patter of the falling rain and occasional roll of thunder…

So, what are your thoughts on the new clip? Will you be taking advantage of Lara’s new stealth mode or will you simply throw caution to the wind and run in, guns a-blazing?
