In the Spotlight: José C

In the spotlight this week is designer and long-time Tomb Raider fan, José C.

José C

So, tell us a little about yourself.

I am a Portuguese freelance illustrator & designer! I love to paint with watercolors, to play violin, photography, read…so many more art things. And to play Tomb Raider! (Isn’t it obvious?!).

When and how did you learn about the Tomb Raider series?

My first contact with Tomb Raider (TR) was in 1995, in a promotional video I saw for TR1. But it was only when TR2 came out that I had the opportunity to explore its wonders.

Do you run a Tomb Raider fansite or blog? If so, what would you say was your biggest achievement to date?

Though I don’t have such site/blog, I have an art-related blog,, which I also use to promote TR’s early beta videos, promotional images & magazine articles about it.

How has Tomb Raider changed your life?

It was the first 3D game that I really enjoyed. Back then, I used to play a lot with my Sega Game Gear. Naturally, all games were 2D. When I got a PlayStation 1, it was a big adventure to me! It made me think that some life challenges are possible to achieve. TR had a very ‘realistic’ approach to the human universe. The locations, the sound effects, the amazing soundtrack…it was all very appealing! 🙂

Were you interested in archaeology before discovering Tomb Raider? Have the Tomb Raider games and films inspired you to learn more about ancient history?

When I was a child, I actually had many dreams about future professions. I wanted to be an astronaut, so that I could explore the universe! And I wanted to be an archaeologist. Can you imagine discovering dinosaurs bones? Or even getting inside a pyramid?! Are traps real?! Does everything hold a meaning? (I was a very enlightened child! *giggle*).

What are your thoughts on Lara’s image? Is she simply the product of a sexist gaming industry or can she be seen as a positive role model?

I always thought that Lara was beautiful. Not in a ‘real beauty’ way but appealing! She was sexy, she could defend herself, she was independent, well-educated, she had a beautiful accent. She was what I think every woman or man should be: adventurous, capable of great things… cunning! 🙂

What’s your favourite Tomb Raider game?

Tomb Raider 2: Starring Lara Croft.

And your least favourite game?

Tomb Raider Chronicles. I just thought it was rushed product…

Classic, Legend-Anniversary-Underworld or Reboot Lara?

C-L-A-S-S-I-C (Do I really need to spell it?!). Though ‘Anniversary’ Lara is something…interesting!

Do you have any favourite Tomb Raider moments or quotes?

Where to start? ‘Don’t you think you’ve seen enough?’ or ‘Anyway…busy girl. Got to go.’ or ‘Gosh! That was my best yet’ *giggle* I love her British accent… 🙂

What about least favourite moments? Is there anything you dislike about the games/films/comics?

Several actually. In ‘Anniversary’ Lara kills Larson in a very cold way. I didn’t like that. In Tomb Raider Chronicles, I didn’t enjoy the way Lara dealt with Pierre. These are just some examples of how cruel Lara became. She won’t accept that sometimes her actions have negative consequences. She became a ‘killer’. The movies, in my opinion, showed two different Lara’s. The comics were fun but it was different approach… 🙁

If you could change one thing about the Tomb Raider franchise, what would you change?

Lara became too ‘sexy’. She became too difficult to be considered ‘real’. Also, the movies made Lara very difficult to accept The first movie made Lara too much like a ‘super-woman’ and the second made her too ‘perfect’. If they had made a movie with sequences more like the intro of the second one, my opinion would be very different. I don’t like what she became with the reboot and I’m not happy with the ‘new’ young Lara…

Which places would you like to see Lara explore in future games?

Portugal!! It’s my country! Also, we have many myths and stories that would make a very unique TR game. 😉

Finally, if you could join Lara on one of her adventures, where would you go?

Where to start?! For example, the Great Wall of China, Venice, Tibet, London, Rome. Going to Egypt with Lara would be wicked! 😀
